Fun Facts Friday

The average baby will double their birth weight in the first 5 to 6 months. Over the next six month a baby's growth begins to slow so you may start to notice their appetite diminish a little. Continuing to breast feed is a wonderful way to make sure that baby gets the proper balance of nutrition. If you are bottle feeding use iron-fortified formula. At this age you will start to introduce new slid foods. Start with fruits, move to yellow vegetables, then green vegetables and then meats. Be sure that baby tries at least a taste of new foods so that you can discover preferences your baby may have. One important note, those funny faces babies make when their trying new food are not a telltale sign that indicates they don't like something, instead it is a natural reflex to a completely new taste and texture in their mouth. As baby grows accustom to a variety of solid foods those sour faces turn into smiling ones.

Fun Facts Friday

Current statistics show that nearly one in three mothers in the U.S. gives birth by Cesarean section which is a record high rate for America. One of the top reasons for the increase in C-sections is rising number of doctors who are hesitant to perform vaginal births after Cesarean. Doctor's once speculated that the danger of a uterine rupture was more likely to occur with women who had previously given birth by C-Section. However new medical studies
have found this happens in only one percent of the cases. Unfortunately regardless of these new findings many doctor's still refuse to perform vaginal births rather than C-Sections because of a fear of malpractice lawsuits. While a fear of lawsuits plays a major role in the rising in number of C-sections there are possible risks for babies born by C-sections. For instance, they are more likely to develop respiratory problems such as asthma. Mothers also have a higher risk of infection, long term pelvic pain, blood clots, and the C-Section procedure may even complicate future pregnancies. Every pregnancy is unique and decisions should be made by exploring all options with a qualified physician.

Fun Facts Friday

Talking, reading & chatting with your baby will help build your child's vocabulary, stimulate their imagination, and improve their communication skills. In fact, the more you speak & read to your child even from the youngest age, the better it is for their growth and development. Studies have shown that language skills and even a child's intelligence are directly related to how many words an infant hears each day. In one case study, babies whose parents spoke to them consistanly (an average of 2,100 words an hour) scored higher on standard testing when they reached age 3 than the children whose parents hadn't been as verbal.

Did you know?

By talking and chatting to your baby while taking a walk, while in a store, or even while driving are all valuable opportunities to create verbal interactions. Reading is another fantastic & fun way to add variety to your chat sessions.

Fun Facts Friday

As adults we can easily distinguish when we hear  words spoken in a different language, but could we tell the difference just by looking at the lips of the person speaking. Amazingly there are new studies that show babies as young as 3 months old can do just that. Babies were shown a silent  video clip of an adult who is fluent in two languages repeating the same sentence in only one language. After the child’s reaction to the video was consistant, the baby was shown the same adult saying the same sentence but this time in another language, the baby’s reaction was one of curiosity and intensity. Child psychologists agree that the results of this testing proves that infants are born with an ability to indentify and relate to "visual speech". These test results also aid experts in understand the relationship between language & brain development.

Did you know …

Research has found that babies actually loose this "lip reading" ability by their eighth month. Studies have also shown that by eight months a baby’s ability to hear the tone differences in vowels & consonants of other languages also decreases. So by introducing your child to another language at a very early age, and being dilligent to speak in both lanuages, your baby will more easily retain it.
