Lets get to the "ROOT" of the matter!

Lots of hair at birth doesn't necessarily mean lots of hair for life and just as a baby born bald can grow a thick full head of hair and keep it into their old age. By the sixth month of pregnancy a baby's hair follicles and the glands in the follicles are fully formed. The follicle glands begin to secrete an oily substance which will help keep the child hair and skin soft. There are about 100,000 hair follicles on the human scalp. Some babies are completely bald even when they hit their first birthdays while others have long thick hair. This is probably because some babies have hair that grows much more slowly than others. It is thought that hormones and heredity influence these hair growth patterns.

INTERESTING TID-BIT:
Although it has not been definitively proven scientists think that the shape of the hair follicle determines if a baby's hair will be straight or curly. Studies have shown people with round follicle have straight hair while those with oval or crescent shaped follicles grow curly or frizzy hair.

When newborns cry they don't actually shed tears, this is because the baby's tear ducts have yet to mature (tear ducts tend to mature at about 6 weeks). Because of this, irritants cannot be washed away causing baby's eyes to become more prone to infection.

Cleaning Your Baby's Eyes

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water and wipe them dry before handling your baby (make that a routine). Pour some cooled boiled or room temperature sterile water into a clean container. Using clean cotton balls or washcloth, dip them into the water and squeeze out the excess. Very gently clean baby's eyes from the inner corners toward the outer corners in ONE stroke. DO NOT rub or wipe in a back and forth motion. Repeat the same process with the other eye using a fresh clean cotton ball or an unused section of the same washcloth. This cleaning should be done daily for the first 6 to 8 weeks of life, and after that at each time you bathe your baby.

Last night I watched a BBC documentary called "Close encounters with giant harpy eagle of Venezuela" with hubby that took our breath away! It was a special on Harpy Eagles, the largest and more rare Eagle in the world. I have always LOVED birds of prey and been fascinated how these birds can be SO fierce and yet when it comes to nurturing their young they are unbelievably attentive and relentless and tireless providers.

This documentary was truly inspiring to me... Inspiration comes in different ways on different days for all of us...

Attention new parents; your little bundle of joy on average is depriving each of you around 350-400 hours of sleep in the first year. If you're a single parent those numbers almost double to about 600-750 hours in the first year. When you do a little calculation that is about one entire nights sleep per week, 52 sleepless nights in the first year. If you ask most any parent...it's worth every lost second of sleep.

Because "smart" is such a vague term, I thought I would break down the brain-boosting benefits of motherhood into the five most likely "smart" attributes: perception, efficiency, resiliency, motivation, and emotional intelligence. All of these categories have been supported by many animal studies as well as some human studies designed to show how mothers have an edge.

The category of perception deals mainly with the five senses. A study I found very interesting showed that pregnant women had sharper "visual acuity" than women who weren't expecting. Emotional intelligence is the most definitive category in which mothers benefit. This brain boost for moms acts as the ability to see the world through someone else's eyes. In most of life's relationships, if you don't agree with a person you can just walk away, but you can't walk away from your child. At least, not if you want to be a good parent. Instead, you've got to stretch your mind to understand their point of view. In no way did any of these studies suggest that women who weren't pregnant were lacking in any of the five researched areas but instead they simply confirmed that the changes women were noticing in themselves were in-fact valid and accurate.

Yesterday was my Daddy's 80th Birthday...he's an amazing man! He has taught me SO much and while my Daddy enjoyed the fine things in life he treasured the simple things. Dinner was one of his favorites times...a time to sit, relax, enjoy good food, a good bottle of wine and each others company. I lost my Daddy in 2009 but he has always been and continues to be one of the greatest sources of inspiration in my life so to celebrate him I made one of his favorite meals.

My life has been so busy lately, i've been caring for mom, household things and trying to keep up with Mini-Mocs orders all on VERY little sleep...needless to say i've been feeling the strain of life's pressures. this past weekend something happened that hasn't in quite some time...my husband took my hand and sat me down across from him and simply looked into my eyes, he didn't say a word, he just looked! it lasted for only a minute but in that moment i felt calm, peace, comforted & loved. with that simple look i knew everything was going to be okay. he gave me the inspiration i needed to continue doing what i needed to do.

PRO: "Motherese" is a brand of chatting better known as "baby talk" and can be important to development. Together, the wide smiles, high pitch, exaggerated expressions and repetition succeed in drawing and holding a baby’s attention. This encourages babies to become an active part of two-way interaction, motherese seems to be an important tool in building and deepening the emotional bond between adults and babies, and serves as baby’s first introduction to language and communication skills.

CON: A recent study suggests that speaking to your baby or young child using "motherese" instead of more complex sentences may set a poor example and could possibly hinder their communication skills. The same research shows that by using more complex sentences some babies will learn the right terms and forms of language early on and develop a higher ability for language comprehension as they grow.

FALSE: There is no preset alarm clock that determines when a baby will gain new skills & abilities. Sensory pathways grow when they are appropriately stimulated with the proper frequency, intensity, and duration.

For example, a newborn usually has a less than a perfect visual light reflex (when a baby is exposed to light and the pupil constricts in response to that light). The sooner this reflex matures and becomes consistent, the sooner baby will develop the ability to see outline and then detail.

My "More than Monday" posts are normally done the night before & up by 7:00am but not today! This Monday and these past 6 days have been FULL of inspiration for me! My beautiful Mom had a bad fall on the 17th in the night (we are thankful it wasn't worse) but nonetheless it was definitely bad enough!!! She broke the pubic bone in her pelvic and I can't even imagine the pain she has been in. Yet I've watched her in these days lean on her inner strength & her deep faith to work through each painful movement. After having a stroke in 2009 she worked tirelessly to regain her complete independence. And now being faced with this uphill challenge that promises to be a difficult and painful 8-10 week recovery my mom still finds the grace & strength to persevere and to run the race that is set before her. I love you Mom, you truly are an AMAZING woman and an inspiration to me & so many others!

Although May 2011 has passed the following baby fact is true each & every May. If someone asked which month of the year the heaviest babies are born you might answer January or February after all the holiday eating, but truth be told the lovely month of May produces the chubbiest babies. On average babies born in the month of May weigh over a 1/2 pound more than babies born in any other month. Tips for staying Cool & Healthy duringyour Summer pregnancy

· Schedule outdoor tasks in the early morning or evening when thesun is lower and temps are not too high.

· Avoid going out of doors when temps exceed 90F try to be near afan or in air conditioning.

· Wearing light-colored clothing will help cut the heat.

· Keep yourself well hydrated. Adding sports drinks can help toreplace essential electrolytes.

· Sipping on a yummy “mocktail” is a sure way to stay cool – tryout the delicious recipe below.

· Carry a spray bottle of water with you at all times.

· Sunscreens not only protect against over exposure but also canhelp keep you cool. Start with a SPF15 or higher 20 minutes before you go out and then reapply throughout the day.

· Take several quick showers to keep cool.

· Keeping your feet up will help reduce swelling.
